I am Kapitol: Maddy Woolrich

Maddy Woolrich has become Kapitol’s first graduate to step into an Assistant Site Supervisor role, choosing a path less traveled compared to the traditional Graduate-to-Project Coordinator route.

Working at the iconic Waterside Hotel project on Flinders St, her new role is a testament to the wide range of career pathways that Graduates can choose.

Woolrich’s interest in construction started early.

“I was always fascinated with the industry. I couldn’t really see myself doing anything else,” Maddy says.

Unlike many graduates who seek roles in project coordination or management, Maddy was drawn to a more hands-on approach.

“I’m more of a visual learner, so I really wanted to be more on site, seeing what was going on.” She says.

In an environment where communication and problem-solving are essential, Maddy’s strengths shine.

“I’ve always been a people person. I can talk to anyone,” she says.

Having only started her career recently, Maddy admits there’s still a lot for her to learn.

“I’ve only been in the industry for two years, but Kapitol supported me and have given me the right tools and resources to be able to go into this position. So I’m proud of myself for getting there so quickly.” She says.

It’s a pathway that’s rarely considered, especially among women in construction, but Maddy hopes her journey will inspire other young people, especially women, to consider on-site supervisory roles.

“People are already asking me how did I get there and asking for help and advice on how they can do it themselves. So, I think now that people have seen it is possible to go from grad to supervisor, people are now more inclined to do it. It’s less scary when someone else has done it,” Maddy says.

She credits Kapitol’s graduate program with preparing her for this role by providing broad exposure to all facets of construction.

“It gave me the exposure to deal with all aspects of construction, from design to estimating to being out on site.” She says.

“When I first started, I was doing more site-based items, learning about safety in construction, doing Hammertech observations and learning how safety controls on site all worked. So yeah, the program really exposed me to all of that.” Maddy says.

She offers clear advice to anyone considering a similar path: “I would just say just do it. Sometimes you have to have faith in yourself,” Maddy says.

Maddy’s philosophy is to seek discomfort to have memorable experiences and excel.
“I think you have to get uncomfortable and just make the jump.” She says.

With her foundation in property, real estate, and construction management, Woolrich is now confidently forging a new on-site supervisory career at Kapitol, setting a powerful example for future graduates and women in construction.

Kapitol is committed to fostering diverse career pathways and supporting graduates through comprehensive programs that prepare them for success in all facets of construction.
